British Columbia Family Vacation: Ferry ride from Vancouver to Victoria

Here are some thoughts and highlights from our ferry ride:

The Ferry ride from Vancouver to Victoria is spectacular
We explored two ways of getting from Vancouver to Victoria: Taking a sea plane and a ferry. The ferry is much more affordable and offers the opportunity to spend time on the water.

We booked our trip through Pacific Coach; the price was $125 Canadian dollars for one adult and two children. A bus picked us up at our hotel at 7:30 a.m. and then we picked up more passengers at a couple more stops, before driving an hour to the ferry terminal. The bus drove onto a massive ship that holds some 1,700 people. We hopped off and walked up to the top deck on the seventh floor. The views were breathtaking with the snowy Olympic Range rising above the blue waters of the Pacific. We spotted a bald eagle and waved to boats passing by. When the boat arrived on Vancouver Island, we hopped back on the bus. An hour later, we were at the Bus Depot in downtown Victoria, a short walk to our hotel, the Best Western Plus Inner Harbour.

Here are some images from our trip:

British Columbia Family Vacation Day No. 2: From Stanley Park to Gastown

Here are some thoughts and highlights from our second day in Vancouver:

The Hop-On Hop-Off Vancouver Trolley is a great way to get around town
This popular tour company operates a fleet of old-school trollies that roll around town and stop at all the hot spots. You can get off the trolley and then explore an area and hop on the next one that cruises by. You never have to wait longer than 20 minutes. The drivers point out all the sites and share colorful history.

We boarded the trolley just a block from the Best Western Plus Downtown and headed toward Stanley Park.

Along the way we passed Canada Place. Breathtaking view!
We rolled down Robson Street, Vancouver's tony shopping district. Roots is a popular Canadian brand, similar to the Gap.

Vancouver Aquarium: Belugas, dolphins and penguins, oh my!
We got off the trolley in Stanley Park and made a beeline for the Vancouver Aquarium. We wanted to get through the doors before the crowds arrived.

The aquarium offers more than tanks full of pretty fish. The world-renowned institution draws crowds for its dolphin show, pair of beluga whales, an Amazon jungle home to sloths and a 4-D experience.

"4-D? What's that?" my son insisted we check out the show first. He was intrigued.

The 4-D experience is similar to 3-D as you wear those plastic glasses while watching a big-screen movie, but the fourth dimension takes things one step further with the addition of sensory effects such as mist, scents, lighting and wind. When the dolphin jumps high into the air and falls into the ocean, you're splashed with water. When the crabs scurry across the sand, you feel things crawling over your feet. When the sea snakes twist and twirl through the water, practically floating into your fave, you feel a snake pop out of your seat. That's when my 11-year-old daughter literally jumped into my lap.

After the show, we walked into a world of jelly fish.

The aquarium is home to two beluga whales, who look like giant marshmallows floating in the water.

My baby daughter's favorite song is Raffi's "Baby Beluga" so she got excited when the whales swam by and I played the song on my iPhone.

Two Pacific white-sided dolphins are the stars of the dolphin show and they do all sorts of acrobatic tricks. Find out the show times as soon as you arrive at the aquarium and arrive early so you get to stand up front.

Stanley Park is a beautiful spot for a picnic
We were hungry for lunch and the restaurants in the aquarium all had long lines. We walked to this nearby Lumber Jack Cafe in Stanley Park. We ordered hot dogs and fresh fruit cups and brought our food down to the beach for a picnic.

After lunch we ran through the Variety Kids Water Park.

Stanley Park is a beautiful spot for walking
With 1,000 acres of pristine forest, park land and beaches, Stanley Park is an urban oasis and often called the "Central Park of the West."

British Columbia Family Travel Vancouver
An 8.8 kilometer sea wall encompasses Stanley Park and after lunch we walked along the park's eastern side from the aquarium to the Lyon's Gate Bridge, tracing the Burrard Inlet.

The Lyon's Gate Bridge was built during the Great Depression, connecting the city with West Vancouver. In the photo below, notice the sea plane flying over the bridge. My son counted 20 of these sea planes flying over during our walk. These "air taxis" transport travelers between Vancouver and Victoria.

We spotted this row of Canadian Geese on our walk.

We walked on to the totem poles. The nine poles at Brockton Point are BC's most visited tourist attraction. The collection dates back to the 1920s.

My kids aren't always happy on vacation
This was my 11-month-old baby at about 1 p.m. in the midst of a melt down! I thought I'd share an image that shows a real-mom moment. No, my kids aren't always smiling.

The poor thing was exhausted and I'd hoped pushing her in the stroller would put her to sleep. I ended up transferring her into the backpack carrier and she finally sacked out and took a one-hour nap.

I'd like to return to English Bay Beach
British Columbia Family Travel Vancouver
We hopped back on the trolley and drove along the park's western side. We passed many places I'd like to visit on another vacation to Vancouver, such as the Teahouse, the Fish House, and the Second Beach Pool, a heated outdoor saltwater pool that hangs right over the harbor.

We rolled out of the park and past English Bay Beach, which was packed with sunbathers on a hot day. The beach is dotted with tree trunks that people use as "beach chairs."

Science World is museum where kids can touch everything
House in a geodesic dome originally built for the 1986 Expo, Science World is filled with hands-on fun. You'll find everything from a human-size hamster wheel to an air-ball maze. We spent most of the time in the new Science of Sports exhibit, where my kids raced each other on rowing machines, scaled a rotating climbing wall and (below) tested their balance on a beam.

Gastown is Vancouver's oldest neighborhood
British Columbia Family Travel Vancouver
Gastown is the heart of Vancouver, where the city was first founded. It's cobblestone streets are lined with brick buildings and leafy trees. Baskets overflowing with colorful flowers hang from old-fashioned lamp posts. It's a bustling neighborhood of artist studios, designer shops, First Nations galleries, restaurants and cafes.

We did some souvenir shopping. My son wanted this gigantic stuffed bear!
My kids had their hearts set on burgers and we grabbed dinner at Vera's, a popular Canadian chain. I recommend the banana shake, the onion rings and of course the burgers!

My kids watched a basketball game on TV while eating. Life was good!

The Best Western Plus Downtown Vancouver has a ping-pong table on the top floor!
After dinner, we returned to our hotel and had fun in the top floor fitness center, complete with exercise equipment, a sauna, a hot tub and a ping-pong table.

British Columbia Family Vacation: Getting to know Vancouver, from Granville Island to Yaletown

Some thoughts and highlights from our first day in Vancouver:

Vancouver, B.C. is a gorgeous city
"Vancouver is a movie-star-gorgeous city." That's a line from a recent New York Times travel story on British Columbia's beloved city and I think it's a perfect description. I'm absolutely stunned by its magical beauty.
Vancouver B.C. travel kids
Vancouver is often compared to my hometown of San Francisco, and I think it's even more beautiful. Vancouver is cleaner and greener. Leafy trees line all the streets. The greenery continues all the way to the waterfront with expansive lawns falling right into the harbor. Window-filled sky scrapers grow from this urban garden.
Vancouver B.C. travel kids
I haven't taken the perfect photo yet, but tomorrow we're going to Stanley Park and I hope to get that postcard image.

The Best Western Plus Downtown Vancouver welcomed us with open arms

The Best Western Plus Downtown is a busting hotel in the heart of the city. The staff welcomed us with open arms, helping us with our luggage, preparing our room long before check-in and directing us to nearby attractions.

We checked into a room on the ninth floor of our the 11-story hotel. The room was comfortable and clean and the beds were topped with fluffy comforters. My kids were excited to have access to a ping-pong table and hot tub on the top floor.

The Best Western Plus sits in the center of it all. You can easily walk to Yaletown, Granville Entertainment District, Robson Street and the ferries that take you to Granville Island. We also discovered that the hotel is only steps from many parks.

Such as Beach Front Park...

which has great swings with views of Vancouver Harbour.
We also climbed the play structure at nearby David Lam Park

But my kids would tell you that the play equipment at Emery Barnes Park was even more fun...

Ferries to Granville Island are an attraction unto themselves
Vancouver B.C. travel kids
Look out over the Vancouver Harbor and you'll notice dozens of little boats zipping back and forth, like busy bees, between downtown Vancouver and Granville Island. A ride on one of these boats is a real joy. The size of a large hot tub, a boat seats only about a dozen people. You sit low on the water and get a close look at all the harbor action: seals playing in the water, birds diving for fish, yachts and sail boats maneuvering around. Plus, a round-trip ride is cheap, costing about $5 round trip, with steep discounts for kids. From our hotel, we could walk to several ferries, including the False Creek Ferry.

The Granville Public Market is a foodie's delight
In San Francisco, where I live, tourists and locals go to the Ferry Plaza Market, the city's beloved showcase for Northern California's organic, locally grown, sustainable food. This temple to food is housed in a beautifully restored building and the market stalls inside are tidy, practically sterile, presenting food as if it were being displayed in a museum. I'm practically afraid to touch the perfectly ripe $15 baskets of strawberries. Did I mention everything is overpriced?

Granville Public Market is the antidote to the Ferry Plaza — it's messy, chaotic, loud, and a bit smelly. The stalls are disorganized and piled high with produce, and there are so many people that traffic jams develop in its skinny pathways. Yes, it's a tourist trap but it also has an authentic quality and is the sort of place you'd expect to find in a bustling European city. And while there might be a few stalls hawking unpalatable food, there are many selling local Chinook and Rainier cherries and dishing up cuisine based on recipes of past generations.
 My kids opted for burritos

And ice cream from Pzaz, a pizza place that makes homemade gelato onsite. Pink bubble gum ice cream!

Yaletown is filled with fabulous-looking restaurants
Yaletown is a former industrial area that's now dotted with upscale lofts, trendy boutiques and hip-looking restaurants. The interiors of these restaurants are inventive and gorgeous, and rather than looking at menus, I found myself peering inside to get a sense of the ambiance. I took many photos like the one below...
And I thought this place looked more charming than hip...

Urban Fare: Best Place for a gourmet dinner on a budget
With two kids and a baby, not to mention a tight travel budget, dining out at a fancy restaurant didn't make sense. Yet, we were craving fresh, quality food so we decided to check out the upscale grocery store in Yaletown called Urbanfare. (Great tip from Shannon Gu, the general manager at the Best Western Plus Downtown.)

The store is basically a temple to local produce and food products.
Square watermelons? Yes, at Urban Fare. They were selling for $79.99 Canadian dollars so we decided to not buy them but we had to snap a photo. Have you ever seen such a thing?

Vancouver B.C. with kids
Boxed water? I'd never seen anything like it and I loved the snarky message emblazoned across the packaging. We grabbed a box for our picnic.
Vancouver B.C. with kids

The kids picked out our dinner: Salami and Swiss cheese sandwiches, tomato and mozzarella salad, bananas, boxed water and sushi made with shrimp tempura, avocado and crab.  Random? Yes, but they were happy and it all only cost $17 Canadian dollars.

Dinner with a waterfront view
From Urban Fare, we walked along the sea wall to David Lam Park. The night was magical, warm and balmy with a couple puffy clouds floating across a brilliant blue sky. Skull boats, filled with teenagers rowing perfectly in sync, glided across the waters sparkling under a sun still hanging high in the sky.

We settled into our picnic spot right at the tip of David Lam Park, a pretty spot to take in this .

The perfect ending to a beautiful day.
