Thanksgiving travel rule 3: Drive on Thanksgiving

We left Portland around noon for our final destination: Harstine Island. The tiny isle sits on the southern end of Puget Sound, just off the coast from Shelton, Wash. Mapquest told us that the drive would take three hours. My husband, Anthony, predicted five hours--after the bad luck we had with traffic the past two days.

Guess what? It took us two hours and forty five minutes. The highways were empty. We arrived at my aunt and uncles a few hours before the turkey even came out of the oven.

"How was the drive?" everyone asked as our family of four piled out of the car.

"Oh, no problem." By then we had already forgotten about the traffic nightmare on San Francisco's Bay Bridge.
