Pressed pennies—could there be a better souvenir for penny-pinching travelers? These coins that are flattened and imprinted by special machines cost about four quarters and one penny. And they certainly fit into anyone's suitcase. You won't be paying a fee for your extraheavy suitcase filled with your pressed penny collection.The first elongated coins in the United States were created at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois held in 1893, and now you can find machines in museums, souvenir stores, zoos, aquariums, and amusement parks all over the world.
Tip: Use pre-1982 pennies. They contain more copper and hold their (new) shape better.

I love this idea! We got some pressed-penny once in a while during our trip but most of the time it got lost before the trip ends. :)

Collecting pressed pennies is one of our favorite (and cheapest) things to do when traveling.

You can save a lot by limiting your exposure to restaurants. Most hotels make a great start of it with a free breakfast. Then carrying a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, sandwich meat, fruit, or whatever, and you have lunch taken care of. This has the added benefit of reducing your calorie intake.
Envious of your Mississippi trip, looks like fun.
