How to occupy kids in-flight? Art projects

How do you keep a 5-year-old entertained on a plane ride?
My best tip is art projects. Yes, glue and glitter sounds like a messy proposition but it's my key to surviving hours in the air with my busybody daughter, Paris. Often I stuff a bunch of art supplies into a Ziploc bag or I buy a kit from Klutz.

On our recent flight to New York, I kept Paris busy with the Pompom Animals kit from Klutz ($9.95). She glued together colorful little pompoms to create penguins, piglets, and porpoises. Yes, she got glue on her dress and she spilled a bag of googly eyes all over the aisle, but she didn't fuss once (well, except when I said no to a third package of cookies)--because she was absorbed in a project that's a lot more fun and gooey than the typical coloring book.

I was once given a great tip on traveling on airplanes with small children. I recently tried it out on a plane ride with my 4 and 5 year-olds on a trip from Oakland, CA to Atlanta, GA. A woman I work with who travels regularly during the summer with her children said that she has the perfect solution to traveling on planes with children....

Pack one ziploc bag with small activities/toys for each child for every hour of the plane ride. Each hour, as the child's interest in the previous bag dwindles, pull out another bag. They don't have to contain anything expensive or fancy. I put all sorts of small items in the different bags: crayons and pencils, little pads of paper, plastic toy soldiers, pieces of ribbon, Silly-Putty, small puzzles and books, miniature Slinkys, etc. I also included a few older pictures of the kids as babies and toddlers (they love looking at their old pictures), and older toys laying around the house that my children had not played with in while. In fact, I packed some of their smaller, old baby toys because I have found that they are really fascinated in their old baby toys and want to hear stories of when they used to play with them!

Anyway, the Ziploc bags are easy to travel with and I just stuffed them into my carry-on backpack. It was the best long flight I have ever had with them!
